Success and Consistency

Athlete Stretching

When you hear the word consistency, what images come to mind?  If you’re a tennis player, you’ll most likely imagine someone who never misses a shot.  In basketball, it might be a player with a high free throw percentage.  Whatever it is you imagine, it is only a very small part of what being consistent means in the overall scheme of becoming a successful athlete and competitor.

Consider being more consistent with your efforts in the following areas:

  • Preparation
  • Focus and Concentration
  • Effort within your performance
  • Strength Training
  • Practice
  • Footwork
  • Watching the ball, puck, etc
  • Breathing and Relaxation
  • Routines
  • Positive attitude
  • Sleep
  • Diet
  • Goal Setting
  • Motivation and Inspiration

That’s a fairly long list and it would be safe to say that I may not have covered everything involved in the process of being a great competitor.  However, consider what appears above and evaluate the consistency of your own effort in these areas.  In future blog posts, we’ll cover some of these items in more depth, but the ultimate goal is for you to design a daily and weekly agenda that will lead to better and better performances over time.  It’s often said in the business world that one’s success can be determined by one’s daily agenda.  What’s on your daily and weekly agenda?  Is it consistent enough?  Is everything on it helping you reach your goals and attain your best performances?

Keep a log of what you do everyday for 2 weeks and then revisit these questions.  You will probably be surprised by the amount of time or activities that have nothing to do with you getting better at what is important in your life.  If you can redesign what you do everyday based on being consistent in the areas listed above, you will transform your life and take a giant leap toward fulfilling your ultimate potential.

Interesting and enlightening post, especially the thoughts on work and business. So much of what I lose time on in the workweek is “busy” work or “paper-pushing,” when I really should be making progress on an important, long-term project. That’s the “goal-setting” aspect you have in that list.
